Hi-Rail Vacuum Trucks for Rent
A hi-rail vacuum truck is a road-legal vacuum or hydrovac truck fitted with retractable rail gear (steel guide wheels) so it can drive to a grade crossing, mount the tracks, and travel the railroad right-of-way to excavate soil or remove debris at sites that conventional trucks cannot reach.
A hi-rail vacuum truck (also spelled high-rail or hy-rail) is a standard vacuum or hydrovac truck built on a highway chassis and equipped with deployable rail gear at the front and rear. On the road it drives like any DOT-legal vacuum truck; at a designated crossing the operator lowers steel guide wheels that ride the rails and align the truck to the track gauge, letting it travel along the right-of-way under its own power. This is what separates it from every other vacuum truck: the work site does not have to be reachable by road. Long stretches of track, remote signal locations, bridges, and culverts that are miles from the nearest access point become serviceable.
Once on-track and set up, the unit performs the same core jobs as its road-only counterpart. A hydrovac configuration uses a high-pressure water system to cut and liquefy soil, then a powerful vacuum lifts the slurry into the debris body for safe, non-destructive digging around buried signal cable, communications lines, and drainage. A dry or liquid vacuum configuration removes fouled ballast, mud spots, standing water, sludge, and spilled material without high-pressure cutting. Debris is contained in the tank and hauled off the corridor for disposal, keeping the ballast section and drainage structures clear.
Because rail work is tightly regulated and access windows are short, hi-rail vacuum trucks are typically operated by crews trained for on-track safety and coordinated with the railroad's roadway worker protection rules. Availability is more specialized than for general vacuum trucks, so lead time and clear scope matter. On Vac4Rent you submit one rental request describing the corridor, the work, and the track access window; rental companies that serve your area reply to you directly by email or phone. Vac4Rent charges no commission and no booking fees, and rental rates are handled directly between you and the rental company.
How it works
The truck drives on public roads to a permitted grade crossing, where the operator engages the hi-rail gear: hydraulically actuated guide-wheel assemblies drop down, lift the rubber tires clear or partially loaded onto the rails, and lock the truck to standard track gauge (4 ft 8.5 in). It then travels the right-of-way to the work site under railroad-coordinated protection. On location, a hydrovac setup drives pressurized water through a wand to break up soil while a PD-blower vacuum draws the resulting slurry up the boom hose into the debris tank; a straight vacuum setup skips the water cutting and simply suctions liquids, sludge, mud, or loose material. When the tank is full or the job is done, the crew hauls the debris back to a crossing, retracts the rail gear, and returns to the road for disposal.

What a hi-rail vacuum truck is used for
Signal and cable potholing
Daylight buried signal, power, and communications cable along the track in a hydrovac configuration, exposing lines safely without strikes before boring, trenching, or foundation work.
Culvert and drainage cleaning
Vacuum out clogged culverts, drainage pipes, and ditches within the right-of-way to restore flow and protect the subgrade, including structures with no road access.
Mud spot and fouled ballast removal
Remove pumping mud spots, saturated fines, and fouled ballast from the track section so crews can restore drainage and stabilize the roadbed.
Catch basin and yard sump cleaning
Pump standing water, sludge, and grit from catch basins, sumps, and pits in rail yards and around bridges where wheeled trucks cannot position.
Signal and catenary foundation excavation
Excavate footings for signal masts, cantilevers, and catenary poles using non-destructive hydrovac digging near live utilities and track structure.
Spill and material recovery
Recover spilled liquids or loose material along the corridor after a derailment or release, containing it in the debris tank for off-site disposal.
Remote right-of-way access
Reach work sites miles from the nearest road crossing by traveling on the rails, eliminating the need to build temporary access roads or crane equipment in.
When to choose a hi-rail vacuum truck
Choose a hi-rail vacuum truck when the work is inside a railroad right-of-way and the site cannot be reached, or safely positioned, from a road, or when you need to travel the corridor between multiple track locations in one access window. If your job is a standard hydrovac dig at a road-accessible site, a conventional hydrovac truck or combo truck is simpler and usually more available. If you only need to move liquids or dry material off-rail, a standard vacuum truck fits. Reserve the hi-rail unit for on-track work specifically, since the rail gear, crew training, and railroad coordination make it a more specialized and less common rental than road-only vacuum trucks.

Hi-Rail Vacuum Truck rental FAQ
What is a hi-rail vacuum truck?+
It is a road-legal vacuum or hydrovac truck fitted with retractable rail gear (steel guide wheels) that lets it drive on highways, mount the rails at a grade crossing, and travel the railroad right-of-way to excavate soil or vacuum debris at sites that are off-limits to conventional trucks.
How does the hi-rail gear let it travel on tracks?+
Hydraulically actuated guide-wheel assemblies at the front and rear lower onto the rails and lock the truck to standard track gauge (4 ft 8.5 in). The truck then moves along the corridor under its own power, coordinated with the railroad's roadway worker protection rules, before retracting the gear to return to the road.
What is a hi-rail vacuum truck used for?+
Common jobs include potholing and daylighting buried signal and communications cable, cleaning culverts and drainage, removing mud spots and fouled ballast, cleaning catch basins and yard sumps, excavating signal and catenary foundations, and recovering spilled material along the track.
How is it different from a standard vacuum truck?+
The core vacuum and hydrovac functions are the same. The difference is the rail gear: a standard vacuum truck can only reach road-accessible sites, while a hi-rail unit can drive onto the tracks and service remote parts of the right-of-way that have no road access.
Does hi-rail work require special crews or certifications?+
Railroad right-of-way work is tightly regulated, so units are typically run by crews trained for on-track safety and coordinated with the railroad's access and protection rules. Relevant certifications in the industry can include OSHA, DOT, and H2S Alive; confirm specific requirements directly with the rental company and the operating railroad.
